Faculty Resources Academic Coaching Your students can improve academic performance with the help of an academic coach. The program helps students develop self-management skills, reading and test-preparation strategies, and public speaking and memory techniques. During the initial intake, if a student suspects a possible learning disability or attention disorder, learning center staff are available to conduct assessments and referrals. Students should contact a learning center at least 24 hours in advance to schedule an appointment. Study Groups Study group sessions assist students in mastering difficult course material while increasing comprehension of discipline concepts. Study group leaders are trained and supervised Rutgers students selected by the course professor; they are not course instructors and are present only to facilitate a study session. Group leaders review the course material with students, as well as integrate study strategies—like note taking, problem solving, and test preparation—that link course content with cognitive skill development in an interactive small group environment. Study group participants earn significantly higher average final course grades than if they simply studied alone. They are also more actively involved in the course, are guaranteed more study time, have a better understanding of course material, acquire efficient learning strategies, and on average earn higher grades in the course than students in the same course who do not attend the study group sessions. Contact a learning center if you would like to set up a study group for your course. RU-tv Tutorials Each semester, the learning centers and faculty broadcast live final exam reviews that students can view either as part of the live studio audience, on RU-tv Channel 8, or via webcast. Broadcasts are archived online for on-demand student access. To view an archived review, contact RU-tv. Writing Assistance For help with writing assignments in the humanities and social sciences, make an appointment for academic coaching or meet with a writing tutor by viewing the group tutoring schedule.
